Chapter 13

Chapter 13 starts out discussing about how electronic communication is an interactive and nonlinear, virtual and open, complex and dynamic: what they writers mean by this is that our means of using technology to communicate is always growing and expanding. Now our biggest tool for communicating is the Internet, and the World Wide Web. Websites all have there own environments, the World Wide Web is held up by the, or servers and networks. The individual websites are collections of files that include individual web pages and graphics. There audiences and electronic communication meeting the audiences needs are the primary goal of the writers and designers of electronic communication. Some important things to know for when creating a document on the Internet incorrupt these five things; screen and page size, legibility, responsiveness, Navigation, Equipment and service. Principles and practices of effective design, there're three things that designers need to keep in mind and that’s information architecture; information should be interlinked. Page/Screen design; the look and feel of the information helps users understand information. Content; is organized and written differently for electronic communication that for traditional print documents. Information Architecture it’s very important that the information is categorized, and the categories have relationships between them and all points made/presented are well established, and be sure to label all of the information so that readers easily understand. Navigating information it’s important to leave "bread crumbs" such as menus which are sequential lists of pages that users know where they are on the site and where they have been.
When designing a web page or screen it is important to keep three things in mind. They are layout, color, and graphics. When considering layout remember that with a web page you are combining many interface elements that must work together. The layout should consist of 75% content and also include good identification. Sizing of your layout is also important. You should consider the applications that are going to be using it and their resolution. You should also leave white space and not make the user have to scroll horizontally. Color should highlight and unify your screen as well as use contrast to make it easier to read. Different colors can also be used to identify various elements of your page. Graphics are used to enhance design and usability, establish identities, help navigate and provide information. Size and type of graphics should be considered especially concerning loading times. There are three types of graphics discussed on page 494; JPG, GIF and PNG. Your page should be easy to read and navigate as many people often skim more then read with so much information available. There are different standards and tools available that are used to maintain consistency throughout pages. Some of them are HTML, style sheets and style guides. More information about each is available on page 501.
I'm done with mine so whenever you are done just copy it to the blog.

I think that the Internet is a wonderful tool. It makes communicating with others quick and usually pretty easy. I’m not going to lie – I would be lost without my Internet. However, sometimes going online can turn into a chore. Some web-sites are so boggled down with graphics and fancy fonts that it is nearly impossible to find what you are looking for. I ran into this problem quick a bit last semester when I was applying to graduate schools. Everything is online now, from information about the schools to the actual application process. It was very frustrating to be told to “Click here” to do a certain task, only to click there and be lead somewhere completely different. I love the Internet as much as the next girl, but sometimes it gets on my nerves.

I think that it is so interesting how our communication has changed over the years so much. I compare to how our parents communicated with eachother and now how we communicate with eachother. Electronically, we have expanded so much. Everyone now knows how to use the internet to talk to eachother and look up information for projects and papers. It is really crazy because kids even younger then 10 already know how to talk on AIM, myspace and use the computer as their source of communicating. Now our parents that are older and should be wiser ask us for help figuring out how to use the internet when people around our age can do something like this in our sleep.

Julia brought up a good point in her post about how communication has changed from our parents generation to ours. Face to face contact in recent years has seen a decline due to electronic communication. With sites like myspace and facebook and text messaging, the face of communication has changed. I didn't even get my first phone until I was almost 20 years and that was 3 years ago. Text messaging was completely foreign. It seems this generation now only knows how to communicate electronically. With some people you can only get a word out of them if they are on facebook. You try talking on the phone or in person with them and it's like the cat got their tongue, so to speak.

The internet and world wide web are tools that I use the most often. they are quick, accessible, and easy to use. They wopen up research exploration to a whole new level becuase of these factors. The five factors that chapter 13 discusses, on what to incorrupt are essential for a document to be the most useful for an audience. It is important for each web page to have every bit of information on the site, and not only on the home page, but also within links. Page and screen design, which includes; color, layout, and simplicity make the site more appealing. If I go to a site and the colors are not appealing, for example to bright of colors, which make it difficult to stare at the screen while reading the context, I will move on to another site, which is easier to read.

I find it amazing how easy communication between people is now than it was even fifty years ago. It is almost like two different worlds. Fifty years the quickest way to communicate with each other was through verbal telephone messages. In the year 2007 it takes a few seconds to get a message to someone all the way across the world. It is almost hard to even imagine technology fifty years ago. I personally cannot imagine not having a cell phone. It speeds everything up so much. I think that is really cool how we are still trying to find faster ways of communication, as well as learning the best way, and most formal way to get these messages across using the internet. Its hard to imagine where we were fifty years ago, but in my opinion, even harder to imagine where we will be fifty years from now.

The internet is probably the most used communication device out there. People just don't write letters like the used to and e-mail, facebook, and myspace are making to easier and faster to communicate with friends with out using the phone. Also communicating complaints or problems with companies can be done on the internet instead of the phone. I never realized how important it is for websites to be consistent until we created our own in this class. It looks so much nicer and is more user friendly when you have consistence with text, graphic, and colors. I think that usability with the internet is very important, I know that when using the internet a web site should be really easy otherwise people will not use it.

I think the Internet is a wonderful tool, not only to communicate with others but also to get your information out. This chapter somewhat goes along with what was learned in chapter 12. Chapter 12 also talks about the layout of a document, the appropriate size of the font and the appropriate colors to be used. I think all of the categories talked about in both chapter 12 and 13 are very important, and I think that it’s very important to follow all of the rules talked about it both chapters. If one didn’t follow the rules talked about in both chapters, there wouldn’t be a very organized or pleasing document.

Electronic communication is growing rapidly into an enormous part of people's lives in todays generation. Because this is true, understanding the important aspects of various electronic media is crucial, especially when designing something like a webpage. Like anything else, keeping the audience in mind can only help. Burnett also successfully discusses practicing effective design, bringing up sizing, graphics, color schemes, general layout, labeling, and more.

Electronic communication has been the most important thing in the world of now. Most of the things we do now require some kind of electronic communication. We chat, call, email and do many other such things requiring electronic communication. And internet is one of the most important things dealing this. This is the most efficient way to get tied to the growing and moving world. The idea of World Wide Web has made it possible for us all to indirectly get in touch with every part of the world. So how these webs should be set up should be carefully and effort-fully handled. They should be well managed, enough sourced, accurate, well organized and also should be visually as well content-wise organized.

I think communication is always changing and always will. It's hard to believe that a few decades ago the internet was for the most part non-existant. Sending a document to someone meant actually going to the post office and sending it through mail. Now things can be sent extremely fast through the internet without the need for hard copies. Web sites can have alot of information, although in my opinion it is only recently that they have really stepped up. Some websites are still clueless as to how they should be layed out, and the information can be hard to find. However, a majority of them are layed out nicely now. It makes a difference.

The internet is the most popular form of advertising, communication, business ventures, and many other things. It always has the newest and latest technology ideas and news. For example I really like to know the weather all the time but I do not like to watch the news or wait for it to come on so I just go on the internet and look it up within two minutes. I love the internet, most of my school work is centered around it and I also enjoy things out of school work on it such as “Facebook” and “My Space”.

While reading the chapter thirteen summary I thought it was well written. As I read the chapter and the summary, I noticed that they mentioned the same key points. Keeping pace with all the different changes in communication is imperative. We have changed ways of communication so much in the past decades. It’s so easy to communicate with people and a lot less time consuming. Communication is so easy now it’s turned into fun, instead of strictly business. The internet has increased ways of communication more then anything else. In Conclusion, we like to communicate with individuals, and the internet is the easiest way to do that.

The internet is a very powerful tool. Not only do we use the internet but other electronic sources. I know at my work I use e-training that we discussed in class. Using e-learning, is using a computer for interactive training. It is also nice because I can refer back to this and not have to bother anyone. We also use electronics to communicate through e-mail and video conferences. This is very different from how they communicated just a decade ago. Electronics have made our life much easier with more ways to communicate research and have fun. Without electronics life would be all around diffrent. How we do our homework and how we talk to freinds.

Thats true how we all evolve so much in communication styles from our parent's generation. Every year now they seem to have some new invention out there in the market sold to us or on the internet. These new inventions just seem to make our lives alot easier by having information being transfer to the other person alot faster and more accessible. The internet is a very important tool for us now and I think we couldn't do much learing or work without it.

The internet is the largest and most available source of information. The internet connects people worldwide. It is being used more and more today. It has become a necessity in business, school, and almost everyday life. I almost wonder how we got along before the internet. Today we are so dependent on the internet that if we go without it we are almost disconnected from work and school. It has been a great advantage to have the internet. It is one of the fastest ways to obtain information. Internet is just one of the technological devices that enable us to stay connected and allow to do business and school.

The internet has changed things so drastically for all of us. When my internet is down or unavailable to me, I feel lost, almost disconnected with society. This has really been the case since coming to college. So many professors have parts of their class online, or send messages of upcoming classes online. Without this communication method, getting information accross would be much harder. I admit, there are some gliches on a lot of websites, but this is because there is so much information on these sites, it would be almost impossible to get the information down without having a few errors here and there. Just thinking back to a few years ago, when the speed of the internet was so slow. Thats when I thought it was a pain to go on. You were always waiting for the page to load. Now, with the speed as fast as it is. You can find much more information in such a smaller amount of time.

The world wide web is a very important part of my life and the lives of people all around me. I am on the internet many times throughout the day. Every time I have a question in my life I don't even bother to ask anybody anymore, I just look on the internet and find answers out myself. The interent is one of the largest tools for communicating. Its technology is constantly changing for the better. One thing that I always have to worry about is the way that others perceive me because of the way I communicate. I communicate to my freinds in a different way than if I were to use the internet ot talk to either a boss or business person.

When I log onto the interent I usually have a certain goal or certain information that I would like to find. The way that website are set about can make this easy or very challenging. If a website is to confusing I generally will just try a different website. I hate when I search for something on Google and in the discription it says that it contain some information but I cant find it anywhere on the website. I think it is important for information to be easy to access like have a good tool bar and graphics to guide you to what you were looking for.

In chapter thirteen I learned a lot. I learned how to analyze key aspects of information by organizing, labeling, and navigating. Also, how to asses web sites for usability and accessibility. Understanding the standards and tools for designing electronic communication was another aspect I learned in chapter thirteen. Figure 13.18 was very interesting to me and how they compared and contrasted between the pictures and showed the different number if KBs in web graphics. Designing electric communication is very important and I thought the summary was a bit long but covered everything in the chapter.

The internet and cell phones have drastically changed not only business but also has affected our personal lives. People who have cell phones are generally easy to find and get a hold of so you don’t have to wait for them to get home or get off the line. Friends who don’t have a cell phone, while rare, are seemingly impossible to reach sometimes. There are many business that without cell phones would loose significant business or would require a receptionist of some sort. The internet has also affected business with advertising, to sales to anything else imaginable.
